Keep It Sexy Simple

My KISS pick of the week is the book The Style Strategy: A Less Is More Approach To Staying Chic And Shopping Smart written by Nina Garcia. Nina and I met up last night for a discussion on being a Frugalista! Ok, we didn’t exactly meet up lol. She had a reading at Barnes and Nobles in Tribeca. She was dressed very chic in a Black Dress and Black Suede Gladiator Heels…loved it!

So, you should know who Nina Garcia is? If you don’t, I’ll give you about two minutes to google her and return to my article. Nina made some good points about being stylish at an affordable price. She stated “Style does not have to cost lots of money. You should not be paying $120 for a T-Shirt. A 100% cotton Tee does not cost that much. Try to accessorize what’s in your closet, take inventory to see what can be altered and recycled. I feel the best accessory for the Fall is the Belt!” I think Nina has been reading my blog posts 🙂

A few questions for Nina:

Designers to look out for?

N: I was on the 5th Floor in Saks looking at the new designers and was happy to see Christian Siriano. Very happy, watch out for him. Also, Dore and Erdem. (I will have to go to Saks to see Dore, can’t seem to find it online???)

What guiding principle should we use in defining your style?

N: Think of what piece you are wearing when you are the most happy and comfortable and that should define your style. Not sweats and sneakers….

You discuss in your book how your Mom had a huge influence on your style. What piece of her wardrobe did you covet the most?

N: Her Pearls! She wore a long strand of pearls and I always wanted them. My Mom always seemed to be very stylish. She was not a sample size, more of a size 12, very curvaceous. She knew how to make clothes work for her. I have a huge admiration for my Mom because of her style influence on me.

Awww, thanks Nina! Let’s give her a huge Fashionista Applause 🙂 Be sure to watch Project Runway Tonight!

Anna Wintour
Anna Wintour Pictures
The September Issue, by R.J. Cutler, debuts this Friday, August 28th in NY. You know what its all about, right? It’s the real Devil Wears Prada. It follows the Editor-In-Chief of Vogue Mag, Anna Wintour as she prepares for the September issue and more. The September Issue is the largest issue of the season, the Fashion Bible its called by most. This year its only (lol) 584 pages of which I just browsed in 15minutes. I will tell you what I liked and loved in the next post. The 2008 issue was closer to 800 pages. I still have it! I can’t seem to throw away Vogue Mags. I never know when I will need it for my own designer inspiration!

Here are the theatres you should run to on Friday 🙂 Info courtesy of Fashion Week Daily!

Community News: The Haitian Roundtable, The New York Women’s Foundation and New York Carib News

I attended a Forum for the 2009 Candidates for The Office of New York City Public Advocate. The Candidates were afforded the opportunity to state their platforms. The Forum was co-sponsored by the Haitian Roundtable, the New York Women’s Foundation and The New York Carib News. The Haitain Roundtable was formed by Yves-Merry Telemaque, made up of several founding members such as Daphne Leroy, Jeffrey Gardene and Patricia Beauvais, to name a few. The organization is comprised of Haitian-American professionals from different sectors, including law, finance, healthcare and government. Their goal is to “heighten awareness of Haitians as an emerging constituency among New York’s key stakeholders and institutions through coalition building, networking forums and events.”

Ana Oliveira is the President and CEO of The New York Women’s Foundation. Since 1987, this organization has been dedicated to serving the needs of low-income women. Twenty-eight years ago, Karl B. Rodney and Faye A. Rodney founded The New York Carib News. This weekly paper is a source for news for the Caribbean Diaspora.

The Office of the NYC Public Advocate is very important, but relatively unknown to the average citizen. Currently the position is held by Betsy Gotbaum. Here’s an overview of this position:

The Public Advocate is responsible for reporting the failure of any City agency or official to comply with the New York City Charter. The office also monitors the effectiveness of the City’s public information and education efforts about citywide initiatives. The Public Advocate presides at meetings of the City Council and is a member of all Council committees. The Public Advocate is also Trustee on New York City’s largest retirement system, with over $40 billion in assets and holds one of six full votes.

The five Candidates were given this question to answer, How are you going to diversify city agencies, for example the Fire Department? Below is a summary of answers delivered by the candidates:

Eric Goia, the Democratic Candidate stated “I am going to put together a diverse coalition. The job of the Public Advocate is to seek justice. There is subtle discrimination and you have to be honest about it and doing real recruitment, make sure that the exams are fair for example the revelation that the test given to become a firefighter is not even written by Firefighters…” He went on to state that he is not for the Term Reversal and that the term limit should have been decided by referendum. He feels the city should make more sacrifices for the kids by extending school hours to five o’clock and supplying children in not so well-off neighbors exposure to the arts, just as kids in the wealthy neighborhoods. He also touched upon racial profiling stating “It has to be through training recruitment that we address this issue, but you also need statistics metrics done every month. By measuring the frequency of profiling you can control the problem.”

Alex T. Zablocki, Republican Candidate stated “I feel the agencies should be more diverse, we are a city of that, it’s also the right way to do it…made up of Italians, African Americans….” He further stated that he wants to help small businesses from becoming displaced due to new developments by adding a new tax incentive to owners and a rent incentive. He also discussed the issue of high property taxes and how NY is no longer affordable. He wants to address this issue as Public Advocate. Alex stated that the most important power of the office to effect change is being able to listen. It you use the office effectively then you can bring issues to the forefront and investigate. Alex also believes the office should be decentralized with a separate budget and subpoena power.

Norman Siegel, Esq., Democratic Candidate stated “I will bring a Civil Rights mind to the position. I would bring about racial integration among the agencies by setting goals and setting a timetable. I will sue for any violation of the 14th Amendment if an agency does not change. If you can show any pattern of discrimination that existed in the past then you must have Affirmative Action.” Norman further stated “I will create an institute of advocacy, you don’t need to be an attorney to be an advocate. So many people don’t know who their Public Advocate is, so I would have town hall meetings about issues like Stop & Frisk. I would raise questions others would not.”

Honorable Bill De Blaiso, Democratic Candidate stated “It’s amazing how the media does not bring certain issues to the forefront. I would use the legislative system and economic power to make change. I would put together a package to get actual dollars to strengthen women businesses. I am deeply concerned about issues concerning children and abuse, need to create preventive services. Would also like to reform the Family Court System, the process is too lengthy and unfair.”

Honorable Mark Green, Democratic Candidate stated “I am running because the city is in trouble. I would run the Public Advocate Office like a law firm, finding out people’s needs and then assisting them. Carol, an audience member, from the New York Women’s Foundation asked How are you going to help immigrant women? He responded “Before any legislation is cut we should do an impact statement and do everything possible to create jobs, work training programs should be created. I like the idea of giving small companies micro loans.”

Keep It Sexy Simple

My K.I.S.S. pick this week is the Chunky Necklace! You can slip on a simple dress and jazz it up with a great necklace. It’s all the rage this Fall 🙂 Of course you can go high-end and buy this lovely sexy piece pictured on the Elle Magazine site.

Or, if you want the Chunky Look for a more affordable price, check out Astali by designer Shannon Astali Dejong. I met her at the Young Designers Market earlier this year and fell in love with her bullet necklace. Check out the site to see what I am talking about! This Olive and Black Swarvoski Hand-Crafted Necklace will cost you $258.

While I was at a book signing last week, I spotted a necklace being worn by, yes a Fashionista! This is a similar version. She said she picked it up at Banana Republic. She did well! I love this necklace and it will only cost you $98!

K.I.S.S. Ciao!

Keep It Sexy Simple

Keeping it Sexy Simple defines my style and perhaps yours. I like to look sexy, yet sophisticated, but in a simplistic way. Effortless chic is what I go for. Here is this week’s Sexy Simple pick…

Grey figure flattering dress by Victoria Beckham is FAB, but hella expensive. This baby is $3,100. Not gonna happen. But, you can find variations of this look.
For example, this dress is from Banana Republic and sells for $142. Still flattering, of course there is a variation in design but the gist is there for a more affordable price. Very Sexy Simple!

Legal Section: Women In Intellectual Property

I attended a breakfast meeting at the New York City Bar Association. The meeting was filled with beautiful women attorneys seeking advice on how to better their careers in Intellectual Property Law. The panel included, Ayala Deutsch, Senior Vice President & Chief Intellectual Property Counsel for NBA Properties, Inc., Lisa Gigliotti, Vice President & Chief Trademark Counsel for L’Oreal USA, Inc., Lori Lesser for Simpson, Thacher and Bartlett and Veronica Mullally for Lovells. The meeting was sponsored by the Committee on Women in the Profession.

Pictured Left to Right: Priscilya Hawkes, Leila Amineddoleh, Veronica Mullally,

The panelists gave great suggestions on how to better navigate your legal career. The resounding sentiment was that you have to work hard, be innovative with getting your foot in the door, and network. Working hard, people tend to throw this saying around and very rarely live up to the expectations, of what “working hard” really means. As attorneys, we should stay abreast with the law by attending Continuing Legal Education Classes (CLE), conferences, breakfast meetings where you meet with other attorneys, events related to your practice area, and maintain memberships with the different organizations, especially Bar Associations.

You have to be innovative in getting the proverbial foot in the door, which can range from being an associate at a law firm or being a solo practitioner. The panelist suggested writing as a vehicle to navigating your legal career. Being able to bring information to people on topics that are important in any aspect of life can be extremely helpful. Write an article on a Intellectual Property topic that has yet to be resolved or on legislation that has yet to be decided, what you’ve just done is made yourself an expert in that particular area. If you need the weight of a more experienced attorney associated with the article, then do the research and writing and ask that attorney to assist you and co-author the article. This is a great way to get exposure and also a way to become a recognizable expert.

Fellow colleagues, you have to network, but there is an art to the beast. I didn’t always like the concept of networking, believe it or not. But, it has its advantages. I think you should not approach people with the sole purpose of wanting something, a job! Your words will fall on deaf ears. Don’t make networking contrived, coupled with a “gold-digging” state of mind. You will loose the purpose of it all. The purpose of networking for me is to merely make connections, if you don’t connect with people it doesn’t work. Don’t force a situation. You should be able to bring something to the table. It’s a business strategy of sorts. This ties back into writing the article, by bringing that to the table you’ve already intrigued the person into listening to more of what you have to offer. In turn, they may want to assist you in your legal endeavors. No guarantee of course, always keep that in mind.

Another issue for us in our careers, is maintaining a healthy balance between our career, our family life, and just being happy people. The women on the panel have been able to maintain a balance by choosing the career path that made the most sense to them. Lisa told us about an employment opportunity with a company, where she would have had to relocate. Her and her husband realized that although the position had its advantages she ultimately would not have been happy relocating. Happiness is a big part of your career and the lack of it can have a direct affect on your work. But, you have to figure out what the balance is between your career and your life. What is a deal breaker in taking on that new position? Will your family be happy, will you be happy? Important questions to address.

Lori stated, “Your clients do not need to know that your out of the office for your daughter’s birthday, not their business. Let them think you’re the greatest sought after attorney and you’re busy!” You’re not lying, your just being inventive, and you are probably the best attorney 🙂 This made perfect sense to me because finding balance when dealing with clients is difficult, especially when you have your own practice. I am trying to maintain my own practice, networking and then my life. You can’t have too much of one without the other.

Last piece of advice, research, research, research! Asking expereinced attorneys for advice is great, but you have to be willing to find anwers on your own. There are so many resources that you can tap into to educate yourself. So, there really is no excuse. You will have the advantage of developing a work ethic that allows you to not become dependent on others for your legal questions.

Alright, now get out there!

This Week in Fashion…Fashion on The Hudson

P7100552On July 11th, I attended Fashion On The Hudson at Riverbank State Park. Sophia Davis, from Beauty Television and Entertainment TV (BTE) and George P. Blount, owner of Global Business Institute, produced this annual event. With the waterfront as the backdrop for the show, and the rain holding out, the show proved to be a great showcase of talented designers. I especially loved the designs by Elizabeth Carson Racker, Nikera, Imani Whyte, TruDiva Designs, and Carmen Swimwear. Check out the slideshow with featured models Christina Mendez, Mia Amber Davis, Monica Verner and Diva Davanna from the Tyra Banks Show!
